Well, i think its quite clear why now in NZ nearly 1/3 adults are obese......not to mention the steady rise in Type 2 diabetes.
It's mind boggling to think how a bottle of Coca Cola that is 2.25l is the same price as a bottle of WATER that is 1.25l. How is this even possible? How did we even get to this point in NZ?
I was talking to my mum about this today and she said that 'back in her day' fizzy drink was so expensive that it was a real treat when her dad would occasionally bring home a small bottle for her family to share.
And now, here we have it being sold cheaper that bottled water.....
There has been a lot of talk in the media for some time about the obesity levels here in NZ and what can we do about it? How can we get it under control? Well, here is a very simple example on how and why NZ has got to the point where 1/3 of adults are considered obese and we have a large number of people with Type 2 diabetes.
Have a look at the way 'junk food' is marketed - the positioning on the shelf at the supermarket, the lower prices compared to healthier options, the time and expense that has been spent on advertising and targeting - in particular young people. The school aged children buying energy drinks and bags of chips because they are seen to be 'cooler' and more 'popular' than a bottle of water and a sandwich. The dairys that have signs out the front - pie and a coke for $5.
Its about time we did something about this!!! Of course i don't have all the answers, but talking about it and creating awareness is a start. I don't think there is just one answer to solving this, its a combination of a number of factors that need to be considered when addressing obesity. But lets face it, if we do nothing, its only going to get worse.
Look at the horrendous stats we have now in NZ and fast forward 20 years and think about what those stats might look like!! People are getting busier and busier and convenient, cheap food is getting more and more popular.
I know the future i want for my own children and them being obese and having type 2 diabetes is something i will try my hardest to avoid!!!
